The End of Dental Fear
A few years ago I received training in oral conscious sedation. Since that time we here at Center for Cosmetic Dentistry have had almost 500 patients receive their oftentimes extensive care utilizing this technique. This technique works so well that I can’t believe that Time magazine hasn’t done a cover story on it to celebrate its arrival. Never in my career did i think i would have patients thanking me for getting them through hours and hours of dental appointments and they barely even noticed it. They thanked me for giving them their "best dental appointment ever!" and of course that means they didn’t really remember much or any of it. The Wisconsin State Journal did a story on us regarding the benefits of this technique. You can find it under "Sleep Dentistry" on our press page at

That’s all for now. Thanks for being here!!

I am extremely scared to go to the dentist, my anxiety is so high that I have not seen a dentist in over 7 years. That type of avoidance has now led me to have a receding gumline, bleeding gums, and mouth pain on a regular basis. I want to do sedation dentistry, but the cost is too high and I would not be a candidate for the financing due to credit problems. I have been unemployed for five months, I am a single mother, and I know I need to see a dentist, but I am beyond scared to do so. I don’t want to lose my teeth, but for some silly reason the fear I have for the dentist stops me from doing what I know is right. It really is embarassing to have this kind of fear, I have always tried to practice proper dental hygiene, but for some reason this has happened. What would you recommend to someone such as myself who is a prime candidate for sedation dentistry and needs it terribly, but does not have the funds needed to do all the work that will now need to be done because of dental neglect?
Thank you for your time!

Stacy,
Thank you for writing. Your concerns are the same as many of our patients. We invite them to come in anyway for at least a complimentary consultation to assess what is really going on. Usually it is nowhere as bad as they think it is going to be. I doubt that your situation is hopeless Stacy so I encourage you to visit us and let’s take it from there. We always have a solution and we can figure one out for you too!

Are you aware of any academic journal articles on the psychology of this issue?
Thanks

I recall a study in the Lancet back in 2002 pertaining to this issue. Let me see if I can find the full reference.
